Horsepower History
The term "horsepower" was coined by James Watt to market his steam engines. He estimated that a typical horse could turn a mill wheel 144 times per hour, lifting a 550-pound bucket 10 feet each time—equivalent to about 746 watts of mechanical power.

Personal Example
I was looking at a European car specsheet and it said 100 kW of power. Converting that to horsepower showed about 134 HP—which helped me compare it to my US car that lists HP!
