Understanding Sleep Cycles

Sleep isn't a straight line—it's a series of 90-minute cycles that include different stages. Waking up at the end of a cycle, rather than in the middle, helps you feel more refreshed and alert.

The 90-Minute Sleep Cycle

Stage 1 (Light Sleep): 1-5 minutes
Transition from wakefulness, easily awakened
Stage 2 (Light Sleep): 10-25 minutes
Heart rate slows, body temperature drops
Stage 3 (Deep Sleep): 20-40 minutes
Body repairs tissue, builds bone and muscle, strengthens immune system
REM Sleep: 10-60 minutes
Brain active, dreams occur, memory consolidation

Personal Example

I was always tired until I started going to bed at 10:30 PM to wake up at 6:30 AM—that's exactly 8 hours in 5 sleep cycles! The sleep calculator showed me I was getting way too little rest before.
